Natural healthy skin routine: rose, calendula, borage and their synergies

Lotions, hydrosols, plant oils, masks: compose an effective and minimalist skin routine with plants of proven virtues for every skin type.

Healthy skin doesn't require a dozen stacked products, just a few well-chosen, gentle actives suited to your skin type. Here's how to compose a minimalist, effective and natural routine, with plants traditionally used in cosmetology and now scientifically studied.

The fundamental plant actives

Damask rose (Rosa damascena)

Tonic, balancing, mildly astringent hydrosol. Suitable for all skin types, particularly mature, sensitive or reactive. Rich in antioxidant phenolic compounds.

Calendula / marigold (Calendula officinalis)

Major healing, anti-inflammatory and soothing agent. Indicated for irritated, damaged skin, eczema, baby diaper rash. Used as oily macerate or hydrosol.

Borage (Borago officinalis)

Plant oil very rich in gamma-linolenic acid (omega-6), nourishing, anti-aging, restructures the hydrolipidic film. Ideal for dry, mature, devitalized skin.

True lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

As hydrosol or essential oil (highly diluted): antiseptic, healing, balancing. Also suitable for blemish-prone skin.

Centella asiatica

K-beauty star. Stimulates collagen synthesis and skin healing (asiaticoside, madecassoside). Studied for its effects on scars and skin aging.

Morning routine (3 steps)

  1. Gentle cleansing with lukewarm water + 2 drops of plant oil (jojoba for combination/oily, apricot for normal, avocado for dry)
  2. Rose or cornflower hydrosol sprayed on the face and patted
  3. 3-4 drops of plant oil or botanical serum (rosehip for fine lines, borage for dryness)

Evening routine (3 steps)

  1. Oil cleansing (double cleansing method): jojoba or sweet almond oil, then superfatted soap with lukewarm water
  2. Adapted balancing hydrosol
  3. Nourishing care oil + 1 drop of true lavender essential oil (optional) for night healing

Frequently asked questions

Can plant oil be applied to oily skin?

Yes, some (jojoba, hazelnut, nigella) regulate sebum production. Oily skin is not hydrated skin: depriving it of fat can worsen the problem.

Hydrosol or floral water, what difference?

None: they are the same products, from steam distillation of plants. The active concentration varies by producer.
